United Arab Emirates: Policy Best Practices for Building Inclusive Education Systems.

In March 2019, the leader of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a new policy of having 100 percent of UAE public schools be inclusive of youth with intellectual disabilities (ID). While for many the landmark decision was an obvious next step in the UAE’s history of commitment to inclusion, the significance of the policy decision and its implications for inclusive policy at a global level warrant a considered examination of how the UAE arrived at this action. To address this question, this brief will present a policy-based examination of one country’s commitment to inclusion, Special Olympics’ work with the United Arab Emirates, and the global impact of that partnership.
