Youth Staying Well and Staying Creative During a Pandemic
Poovanam and Hans Pareeksheet are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Mauritius who will lead a Youth Innovation Project to enhance the creativity, imagination, and preparedness of youth with and without intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Youth Leaders plan to host live virtual sessions for their peers ranging from art to self-care Poovanam and Hans Pareeksheet will be collaborating with the Special Olympics Mauritius Clinical Director and Psychologist to inform youth on health and safety precautions as well as how to mentally prepare for if another wave of COVID occurs. Poovanam and Hans Pareeksheet are motivated by the lack of virtual resources during this time to express creativity and the lack of resources to maintain a healthy state of mind. Poovanam and Hans Pareeksheet hope that their project will improve the minds and freedom of youth in their own community during this time of uncertainty and restriction.
Poovanam and Hans Pareeksheet will publicly share the drawings and creations of the participants as well as the progress of the project. Over the course of a month, they plan to garner over 1500 social media impressions. This will be an attempt to inspire and influence others across the world to do their part in advancing the development and growth of youth and Special Olympics athletes. The project will be completed with a follow-up survey so that the Youth Leaders can better understand how youth with intellectual disabilities and without disabilities are being effected at this time while they continue to strive for an inclusive community and Unified Generation.
