Unified Cycling for the Community
Stephanus and Yofan were named Innovators of the Week! Click here to hear more about their story and the impact they are making in their community.
Stephanus and Yofan are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Indonesia who saw the opportunity to work with a community of local individuals for their Youth Innovation Project to create a Unified Cycling event and spread awareness of inclusion to those in Bandung City. Before the cyclists participate in this event, they will be given information about Special Olympics Indonesia and how their involvement is contributing to a more inclusive world. While cycling is the main event that will draw people together, there will be other activities for individuals to participate in.
For this large event, Stephanus and Yofan will work with the Special Olympics Indonesia National Director, Marianne Samosir, the Athlete Leadership and Youth Activation National Coordinator, the Indonesia Youth Activation Committee, and volunteers of the organization. On the morning of the event, cyclist and athletes will travel 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the start line to the finish line, with their bikes decorated with Special Olympics and R-word campaign materials. Before starting the race, an R-word banner will be available for people to sign to show how connectedness through a campaign can bring a group together. Once the banner is signed by all participants, a group of athletes and partners will walk 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) and lead the Banner Parade and guide participants and spectators to a Unified Zumba event. The Zumba will be free for anyone to attend, but individuals who are interested in getting involved are encouraged to sign the R-word banner before entering the dance session. After the event is over, the Indonesia Youth Activation Committee will stay in contact with the cyclist community for future partnership in other events.
Stepanus and Yofan see great opportunity to unite a variety of individuals through their work. To them, being part of the Unified Generation is about friendship and so much more. They believe that “we are the generation that will take the lead to shape our future. Our minds have never been fettered, are very open to new concepts, and potent to broaden everyone’s perspective in order to show respect to people with intellectual disabilities.”
