Strengthening Mental Health and Wellness among Youth
Aaynu and Nakul are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Bharat who participated in the 2019 Special Olympics Asia Pacific Regional Youth Leadership Summit. Together, Aaynu and Nakul will lead a Youth Innovation Project to promote the independence of youth with intellectual disabilities (ID) by supporting mental health and wellness. These Youth Leaders will work with their project mentor to create a weekly workshop to enhance the daily lives of youth with ID. Aaynu and Nakul hope to achieve this goal by creating an open platform to discuss topics such as the importance of mental health, how mental health relates to independence, strategies for effective decision making, meditation, and family counseling. Aaynu and Nakul hope that their project will instill independence and empower youth with intellectual disabilities in Bharat.
Aaynu and Nakul will implement their project over a period of twelve months. The Youth Leaders will spend six months planning their project and six months implementing the weekly sessions throughout several cities in Bharat. Aaynu and Nakul will work closely with their project mentor, a psychologist, to develop a curriculum suitable for youth with ID of all ages. The Youth Leaders will then approach schools and colleges to form the clubs to deliver the weekly sessions. Aaynu and Nakul hope their project will boost self-confidence, develop social skills, and ultimately strengthen the mental health and wellness of youth living with intellectual disabilities.
