Expanding Employment Opportunities in Guam
John and Kane are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Guam working on a Youth Innovation Project to develop a blog and a vlog campaign called "We Are Ready to Work" for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). John and Kane will use Facebook to share these resources but hope to develop a website as well. Motivated by the lack of employment opportunities for individuals with ID in their area, John and Kane want to connect individuals with ID to local employers. The pair intends for a Facebook page to be a platform to discuss topics regarding individuals with ID and the current employment landscape. Once established, John and Kane plan to develop page tours and vocational training for individuals with ID, their families, and their employers. By providing individuals with ID the opportunity to connect with others in their community, John and Kane are leading their Unified Generation by creating a more inclusive culture.
Over the course of a year, John and Kane will work with website developers to create a user-friendly online platform that is easily accessible by all members of their community. While the website is being constructed, they will share the same information via Facebook. The pair will work with individuals with ID, their families, and potential employers to determine what topics and features will best meet their needs. By supporting their website with in-person training, John and Kane are actively engaging individuals with ID in their community and increasing their success in their new position. John and Kane’s Youth Innovation Project will not only empower individuals with ID by providing them employment opportunities, but it will also develop a better understanding of ID in their community by giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their unique talents.
