The following post was written by Sih and Jie, two Special Olympics youth leaders from Chinese Taipei. The pair make it their mission to strengthen inclusion in their community. Check out how they #innovateforinclusion!
The event featured camping and sports. We designed a series of related activities, including camp construction, orienteering, basketball training, and various competitions. Young leaders had frequent interactions and exchanged with athletes. They were able to work together to complete tasks — no matter how difficult.
A person can tire very fast, but a group of people can go very far! Because of mutual cooperation and shared beliefs, everyone united together to make the event a success.
At first, I faced a few struggles involving preparing for exams and running the activity. I eventually made a choice and had the courage to face the tasks before me. Because of this courage, opportunities were created for myself and others. The role of being a leader gave me many chances to grow, improve, and learn quickly!
As a leader, it was good to pay attention to the small details and do things independently. However, it was also important to learn how to assign tasks to others and trust them to execute things properly. In the process of leading others, preparation is essential. Therefore, if there is an emergency or surprise, we are ready to tackle the issue. It is always a good idea to reserve space for flexibility in case of a sudden situation that changes the plan.
In this event, the athletes cooking with the young leaders impressed me the most. In a limited time, everyone was able to strike a balance between themselves and others. The athletes took up leadership roles and did an amazing job cooking a delicious lunch!
After two days of close contact, I found that both athletes and young leaders have their own unique highlights and potentials. This two-day activity became a stage for them to showcase their talents!
I have to thank all of the people who helped carry out this event and make it a success. Both teachers and staff were of great help. What’s more, the leaders of Special Olympics Chinese Taipei supported me whenever I needed help. Due to the contributions of everyone, the event came to a perfect end. I hope that the spirit of inclusion can be more deeply rooted in everyone’s minds and that everyone can continue to spread inclusion throughout society.
